The Manx National Farmers Union (MNFU) says the government has left Manx producers to “flounder” with a lack of routes to market.
At the Royal Manx Agricultural Show the MNFU gave away potatoes as it took a stand against British supermarkets and the government.
The ‘Potato Protest’ highlighted the lack of Manx produce that is available in supermarkets on the island.
Farmers Lacking Support
Sarah Comish, General Secretary of the MNFU says that it isn’t just aimed at supermarkets but also the government and “what they procure for their own services”.
The potatoes were all grown for Shoprite, which has since been taken over by Tesco.
Sarah explained that the British supermarkets will not take the quantity that had been grown for Shoprite, and farmers “need that to change”.
Sarah asked why the government aren’t supporting local producers and why the industry has been left to “flounder”.
