Regan Corrin created a piece of Isle of Man athletics history on Sunday (January 14), when he achieved the best-ever long jump distance by a Manx athlete.
Competing in the Northern Athletics U17/U20/Senior Indoor Championships in Sheffield, Regan won the gold medal in the U20 Men’s long jump with a distance of 6.94 metres.
This exceeds by two centimetres the outdoor record set by Phil Riley at the 2007 Island Games in Rhodes.
Into the history books
Regan put himself under pressure by fouling his first two jumps, but then everything clicked into place as he came very close to the seven-metres mark.
He jumped further than the senior winner.
This is Regan’s first year in the U20 age group, and with personal bests of 1.97 metres for the high jump and now 6.94 metres for the long jump, the next targets of two and seven metres respectively are getting very close.
High jump
During last year (2023), Corrin had also been impressive in high-jump competition.
He took gold in the men’s high jump at the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey in July, followed by taking victory at the England Athletics U15 & U17 Championships in Birmingham in August.
