Late last night (January 5), Nautilus members working onboard Isle of Man Steam Packet Company (IOMSPCo) vessels have ceased industrial action.

The was following the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company withdrawing “the threat of fire and rehire” and has committed to further talks and arbitration if necessary.

The Union says the action has been stopped with immediate effect.

Nautilus statement

In the statement issued by Nautilus, it said:

“The Union took this step after Manx Sea Transport Guernsey, the employer of officers who work onboard Steam Packet vessels, issued a withdrawal of the notice of termination letters sent to employees on 22 December 2023.”

“Following constructive dialogue, facilitated by the Manx Industrial Relations Service, the company has withdrawn notices of termination issued just before Christmas and has agreed to further talks and to engaging in arbitration should talks again result in a stalemate.

“We remain committed to engaging with the company in seeking a genuine offer that is acceptable without the threat of fire and rehire.”

Steam Packet sailings

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company has welcomed the decision by Nautilus International to “repudiate” the industrial action.

The action short of strike commenced on December 27, which ended up resulting in the Manxman sailings being cut down to one a day.

A spokesperson for the Company said it “looks forward to productive discussions about resolving the remaining issues in the negotiations around changes to terms and conditions to accommodate live aboard working practices within the Company’s fleet.”

Adding: “Having commenced discussions on the subject in October 2020, both parties owe it to all stakeholders – including officers, crew, customers and Island residents – to put maximum effort into ensuring a satisfactory, lasting and final outcome to the meetings later this month in order to avoid any further disruption or uncertainty.

“The Company looks forward to reinstating full service with Manxman.”

An update will be published as soon as details are confirmed for a reinstated Manxman service.
