72-year-old Gordon Drinkwater will be cycling 172 miles this week to raise funds for Manx charity Breast Cancer Now.
The local man will cycle from Whitehaven to Souths Shields over three days, starting on Thursday (July 18).
Gordon won’t be stopping after his first challenge as he also has another 100 mile ride planned for August which will be from Chester to Hereford between two RAF bases where he was once stationed.
Breast Cancer
Raising much-needed funds for Breast Cancer Now is close to Gordon’s heart, as he lost his mum to breast cancer many years ago.
His wife Glynis was also diagnosed 18 years ago and fortunately, after treatment, is doing well and enjoying life.
Raising funds for research into this terrible disease is really important to Gordon and his family especially as Breast Cancer Now has a goal “that by 2050 everyone diagnosed with breast cancer will live and live well”
Gordon says, “I want to help them get closer to that goal”
Fundraising
Gordon started cycling in 2020 during the pandemic as a way to keep fit, and last year raised £1,300 on a cycle challenge from Liverpool and Chester and back.
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is supporting Gordon with travel to and from the island, as part of its Manx Community Assistance (MCA) scheme.
The aim of the MCA scheme is to provide community assistance to those whose aims are to improve the quality of life of island residents, and assist island based or international charitable organisations or good causes.
