A Dan Simpson hat trick inspired a 1-7 win for Corinthians as they progressed into the ECAP FA Cup second round.
Tasked with a potential banana skin at Division Two title hopefuls Old Boys, the top flight side’s class showed when it mattered most.
After a slow start Cam Brew had the first effort for the home side as he got behind but Jack Corran did well to put his effort behind for a corner, which in turn was cleared.
Old Boys’ Nathan Quayle made his first good stop of the afternoon soon after as he denied Conor Clark when he was through on goal.
Despite a series of good stops by Quayle, he could no nothing to stop Dan Simpson opening the scoring as his cross/shot (cross) floated into the far corner to make it 0-1.
Simpson grabbed the second before half time too as his free kick clipped the post on the way in, such was his lack of celebration even his own bench thought it had gone wide, 0-2.
Second Half
Early in the second half Old Boys grabbed one back as a half cleared corner was riffled into the bottom corner by Danny Corrin 1-2.
Despite Quayle and his back line’s best efforts, Corinthians soon had a third as Simpson turned provider, getting onto a ball behind the line, he drilled it across to Clark who tapped in to make it 1-3.
As Old Boys lived dangerously at the back Sam Corkill sealed the tie with a fantastic strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box to make it 1-4.
Simpson then got his third just moments later to make it 1-5 and really knock the stuffing out of Old Boys.
Late goals from Josh Riding and Joe Middleton make it 1-7 to Corinthians, but it was a result that failed to reflect the fight Old Boys put in before the fourth goal went in.
Despite the result, it was only in the last 25 minutes where Corinthians really turned the screw, but could have had more if it wasn’t for Quayle’s saves.
