Manx.News has been told by a number of Isle of Man Beef producers, that a substantial quantity of Manx beef is being destroyed by Isle of Man Meats.

The claims by industry sources are that around seventy sides of beef, amounting to around £60,000 are to be sent to the animal waste plant to be destroyed.

Left to rot

Sources say that the beef has allegedly been left to rot since mid December.

The abattoir in the Isle of Man, is Government owned and the facility is operated by an ‘arms length’ company “The Isle of Man Meat Company Limited” (Isle of Man Meats).

Manx.News has reached out to the DEFA Minister, DEFA Officers and representatives of Isle of Man Meats, to have the claims verified, however none of the people we have contacted have yet replied to deny the claims, nor verify any figures.

Bail Outs & Damning Reports

Isle of Man Meats has been bailed out by the taxpayer over many years and was the subject of a damning report in to its operation published in October 2022.

The Birnie Report commissioned by the Isle of Man Government, was highly critical of the way the facility was managed and operated.

The Report lead to a series of changes made by DEFA who have responsibility for the facility.

A change of management in 2023 brought in a new managing director and leadership team.
